FULL: Jazz Improvisation Workshop with Dan Fox

This workshop is full. Participants in this workshop will learn about the art of improvisation from trombonist Dan Fox. Dan is the director of the Arlington Jazz Festival and has had a prolific, international performing career in modern and traditional jazz as well as big band. Dan will share techniques to help participants develop their own improvisation skills and artistry.
Free for WCMS students/$15 for the general public. Open to musicians with at least two years of playing experience.

In the Moment: Rhythm and Performance Workshop

Start Date

Do you want to improve your skill and confidence in improvisation, including across changing or uncommon time signatures? Very often, challenges with improvisation don't come from a lack of skill, but rather from being tied to traditional rhythm patterns that we learned early on, but may not translate well to the genre or meter that you're playing in now.

Jr. District Mock Audition Workshop

Registration Deadline: January 15, 2024
This workshop is for students in grades 6-9 trying out for the MMEA Junior District Festival. The workshop will provide a wealth of information about the audition process including how to prepare, manage nerves, and develop presentation skills. Students will divide into vocal and instrument groups to perform for adjudicators and receive constructive feedback on their solos and scales.
Open to all singers and instrumentalists; you do not have to be a WCMS student to participate.
$25 per participant; register by January 15.

Suzuki Parent Education Session

For currently enrolled Suzuki Piano and Violin families!
Join WCMS Suzuki faculty members for a 1-hour session toreview, refresh, and reinforce some of the main concepts we learned during your orientation about the Suzuki method. This session will also be a great opportunity to share and discuss tips, tools, and helpful techniques to support your child's at-home practice and learning. Our newest Suzuki families can learn from the experiences of our more seasoned families, as they share what they've learned throughout the Suzuki program.

Workshop: A Crash Course for Parents on Musical Terms

This workshop is for parents who would enjoy learning basic musical terms and a brief history of music so they can share in the knowledge being learned by their children. The goal of this workshop is to enable parents to recognize and understand various music titles and forms along with a brief music history. This will help parents know how to pronounce music titles, forms of music, and how to properly write music titles on recital sign ups, audition forms, and competition sign ups.

We will practice listening to the colors of the notes of the blues scale...and will practice inventing lines, and improvising lines, in the context of 12-bar blues. All interested are welcome, whether you have no improvising experience, some improvising experience, or much improvising experience!

Workshop: Make Your Own Reed

For ages 14 through Adult.
Oboe teaching artist Kyoko Hida-Battaglia will guide you in how make your own oboe double reed. She will share her knowledge of the materials and tools that are needed for successful reed making.
Each participant will learn the technique of making their own reed during this hands-on class!
Note: There is a $5 materials fee to be paid to the instructor.
